Kevin Warwick ... a researcher in cybernetics at the University of Reading, has been working on creating neural networks that can control machines. He and his team have taken the brain cells from rats, cultured them, and used them as the guidance control circuit for simple wheeled robots. Electrical impulses from the bot enter the batch of neurons, and responses from the cells are turned into commands for the device. The cells can form new connections, making the system a true learning machine.

The small brain tissue sample sits on a control chip for the robot, lives for about 3 months... and each one acts differently. The ease at which they are scooting around the lab is slightly disturbing to watch. Very impressive results.

What would really be interesting is if it recognized and avoided a rat trap if it was exposed to one .

If I saw that, I'd probably cash in my 401K and head to Vegas. Win or lose, doesn't matter -- it's all over anyway. O_o
